One of the most dangerous things that a client can do is try to outsmart their attorney. The reasons why are fairly straightforward:
- Even the most junior member of a law firm has probably got more knowledge about the law, and how the law works, than you will acquire from your Google search.
- By taking actions behind your lawyer’s back you may be setting a trap for yourself because your lawyer is not “in the know” about what you are doing and they are making moves while handling your case.
- You let your lawyer’s insurance carrier off the hook for your losses by ignoring your lawyer’s advice.
In a Bankruptcy context, going behind your lawyer may also result in you being accused of a Bankruptcy Crime. The penalty can be a fine or imprisonment not more than 5 years, or both. Listen to your lawyer, talk to your lawyer, keep your lawyer in the loop.
